Since 125 years the society for International Youth Work (VIJ) and the Protestant Women’s Association provide protection and guidance for young women in migration.

VIJ, as an association of social welfare workers, sponsors and promotes Au-pair programs. Our goal is a is a tribute to intercultural competence, international understanding and improvement of language skills, which ultimately improve job qualifications of young migrants. VIJ arranges, advices and guides Au-pair-girls including rare Au-pair boys.

Au pair in Germany


Would you like to spend some time as an au pair in Germany (in or near Munich)? Here we have gathered the most important information for you.

After you have informed yourself in general, you can read detailed information in our leaflets, look at application forms, print them and send them to us. We can only make arrangements for you, if you have sent us the application forms with your full address and telephone number, e-mail and official references by post or mail (signatures have to be scanned). As soon as we have received your documents we will call you, and only then can we look for a family for you. The families are personally in contact with us. We offer and insure any help in case of any appearing problem.

Requirements

  • Enough German knowledge (a teacher’s or a school’s confirmation in German language is needed).
  • Age: from 18 to 24 years (the au pair must have been granted visa before the 25th year of age).
  • Experience in household
  • Experience with children
  • Desire to possibly stay in Germany for 12 months
  • Money for the outward journey and the return journey (paid by au pair before trip).
  • Physically fit and able to take some psychological strain
  • An au pair visa (The application takes about three months and has to be applied for at the German embassy/consulate in the native country. Upon entry as a tourist without valid au pair visa, the taking up of an au pair profession is legally not possible. An immediate expulsion can follow.).

What is the purpose of an au pair?

  • Assistance in looking after children and all arising chores 30 hours a week. One or two times a week babysitting, occasionally also at the weekend (a job on the side is not allowed).
  • 1.5 consecutive free days each week, once a month these days should be a weekend.
  • If the au pair stays for a whole year, the au pair has the right to take 4 weeks of vacation. If the stay is shorter, two weekdays for every full month of employment.
  • The participation in language classes and the visit of cultural organizations is possible during daily leisure time.

Duration of stay

  • Non-EU citizens 12 months, or one school year, EU citizens 6 or 12 months Obligations of the guest family

Obligations of the guest family

  • Free boarding (including food)
  • An allowance of at the moment € 260.00, also during vacation
  • Health insurance (incl. pregnancy) only for acute sicknesses, as well as accident- and third party insurance
  • Cost of the monthly ticket for public transportation

Costs for the au pair

  • Ticket for outward journey and return trip
  • Fees for the language classes
  • In case the stay takes one year a financial reserve of about 300.-€ is recommended.

Adjusting to unknown day to day habits, communication in a foreign language and getting used to a new area of responsibility will challenge you, especially in the beginning. Before your application, please consider if you are able to cope with some strain and have enough power to get through this responsible activity.
